Profitability

How to review laser order profitability.

A completed quote is not proof of profit. Compare the estimate with time, waste, scope changes and net payout.

A quote is a prediction. Profitability review compares that prediction with what actually happened: material used, machine time, labor, revisions, failed pieces, the marketplace payout and the customer's final scope.

Review after the payout, not only after delivery

A marketplace order is not fully closed when the item ships. Refunds, chargebacks, platform adjustments and ad charges can change the net amount received. Use the final payout and keep the estimate alongside it.

Track four variances

  1. Material: quoted amount versus actual yield and waste.
  2. Time: quoted machine and labor minutes versus observed time.
  3. Scope: revisions, proof changes and extra communication.
  4. Revenue: listed price versus final net payout.

Separate a one-off problem from a pricing problem

One difficult customer or one machine failure does not automatically mean every price is wrong. Look for repeated patterns. If remakes are consistently higher than the allowance, or setup takes twice as long for a product line, update the model rather than absorbing the difference indefinitely.

Use a small review routine

Review the largest and most unusual orders weekly, then review a sample of normal orders monthly. Update the machine rate, material allowance and labor estimate when new information is consistent. Keep the calculator inputs and business records in a form you can understand later.

What to change first

  • Raise a minimum order when setup is repeatedly unpaid.
  • Add a design change fee when revisions exceed the included round.
  • Increase the remake allowance for a specific material.
  • Change the machine rate after a repair or lifecycle change.
  • Stop promoting a product whose actual margin is below the business's minimum.

Re-run the pricing calculator with the corrected assumptions and retain a copy of the before-and-after comparison.
